Nite Moves Summer Sunset Series 2016, Leadbetter Beach

Nite Moves | Summer Sunset Series | Race Report | RR
Nite Moves is held every Wednesday, during the summer, on Leadbetter Beach in Santa Barbara, CA.  There are several different races held, mostly, simultaneously.  For swimmers, there is a 2000 meter open ocean swim, as well as two different distance duathlons: 1K swim and 3.5 mile run, or 500 meter swim and 1 mile run.  Runners can compete in a 5K.  Kids aren't left out.  They have their own events:  a mile race or a soft sand sprint (for the youngest).

There is a pretty significant post-race party that includes live music.  Athletes get a post-race taco and beer.  On the website, it says that there are bib drawings for door prizes, but I’ve never stayed long enough to participate in the raffle.

Generally, I have found the event to be well organized.  The staff is polite and helpful.  The 5K starts on-time.  The course is properly measured, and, though not chip timed, I've never had a problem with the timing.  Unfortunately, the band is always mediocre, at best.

This year, I intend to go to at least four, maybe more.  It is a very big commitment, but I am incorporating it into my half training.  The 5K has a great elevation profile for training.

June 29, 2016

In order to reach a goal of 1000 miles by the end of June, I ran in the morning, and I also went to spin on Tuesday evening.  My legs were far from fresh, but Hansons plan sets up your speed day after five days of training.  I intend to maintain that same concept while substituting these 5Ks for my speed day

My son was nice enough to take the drive with me up to Santa Barbara.  He said that I must produce an audio book, so I dug out one in the Narnia series that we listened to years ago.  Neither of us remember it, so the long drive went pretty quickly.

We got there at about 6:15.  The band was already playing, so my son set up a chair, listened to the music and played on his phone while I got ready to race.  I warmed up by jogging to the bathroom, and I did a sort-of walk-jog up the hill to the start.

I have to admit that I forgot how difficult this race is.  I started in the middle of the pack which was a mistake.  I spent energy jockeying for position.  By the time I passed the 1/2 mile mark, I was feeling spent.  By the end, I was just holding on and pretty miserable.

My time was 22:45.  6th female out of 81 females.  1st in age group.  34th out of 186

Usually, I am happy enough with my taco, but my post run taco was the worst that I've ever tasted.  Before I tasted it, I tried to buy one for my son, but I was told that there was nothing that I could purchase.

July 6, 2016

Today is my 6th day of running, and I ran an easy 3 miles this morning.  My son took the hour long drive with me, again.  My Ipod was working fine when I got out to the car, but it completely stopped working on my warm-up.  I had to run without music, which may have ended up being for the best.  I did a lot better this week.

My time was 22:26.  3rd female out of 58 females.  1st in age group.  25th out of 146

Post race food was a wrap rather than a taco and it tasted much better.
